Governor Tomblin Signs Proclamation Declaring Flood Disaster in Jackson County, West Virginia

Disaster occurred as a result of rain and flooding in November 2011

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today signed a proclamation stating that significant rainfall and flooding, occurring between Nov. 21, 2011 and Nov. 23, 2011, caused severe damage and losses to the farm industry in Jackson County, West Virginia thereby qualifying the area for a flood disaster declaration.
 
“Our farms play an important role in our state’s food production and our rural economy,” said Gov. Tomblin. “The flooding experienced in Jackson County caused extensive losses, making crops unsalvageable for livestock feed or commercial sale. It is my hope that through my disaster declaration, farmers will receive the assistance they need to recover and continue the traditions of farming.”

The flood conditions resulted in damage to current and future crops, including yellow corn, as well as damage to conservation structures and fencing. The crop loss is estimated at roughly $60,000.

As a result of the governor’s declaration, the West Virginia Department of Agriculture is enabled to apply for federal assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the disaster victims.
