Governor Tomblin Appoints the Honorable Samuel J. Cann, Sr. to Represent the 12th Senatorial District

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today appointed the Honorable Samuel J. Cann, Sr. to represent the citizens of the 12th Senatorial District filling the vacancy created when Sen. Joe Minard resigned to serve as the Clerk of the Senate. Cann’s appointment is effective immediately.

“From his first day in the House of Delegates, Sam has worked hard for the people of Harrison County, and I am confident he will continue to do so as a state senator,” Gov. Tomblin said.

Del. Cann was first elected to the House of Delegates in 1994 and is the senior member of the Harrison County legislative delegation. In the House, he has held a number of leadership roles including chair of the Committee on Small Business and Economic Development and co-chair of the Joint Committee on Economic Development. He has also served as President of the Independent Oil and Gas Association.

A graduate of West Virginia University, Cann earned his M.S. from the University following his undergraduate studies. He has served on the Board of Directors for the West Virginia University Alumni Association, and his community service includes the Knights of Columbus as well as a member of the West Virginia Special Olympics Board of Directors.

Cann resides in Harrison County with his wife, Phyllis. They have five children and five grandchildren.
