WAR, W.Va. –Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today joined Jake Steinfeld, Chairman of the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils, state and local leaders, parents, along with students, faculty and staff from Southside K-8 to cut the ribbon on the school’s brand new state-of-the-art Live Positively™ Fitness Center. Southside K-8 is one of three West Virginia schools celebrating new fitness centers this week. The fitness centers were awarded by the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils to schools that demonstrated innovative ways in promoting physical activity and wellness to their students.
“This is a great day for West Virginia and students throughout the state,” said Governor Tomblin. “I am thrilled to team up with Jake Steinfeld to promote the National Champion schools program to West Virginia and have three schools throughout the state each win a Live Positively™ Fitness Center. Southside K-8 made a commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle and is being rewarded for their efforts. It is my hope that every child in West Virginia will be inspired by the students at these three winning schools and will pledge to make fitness part of their daily lives.”
“I’m fired up to be at Southside K-8 today to cut the ribbon on their brand new Live Positively™ Fitness Center. Governor Tomblin immediately jumped on board and embraced our vision of building a nation with the fittest kids in the world - one school at a time. He recognizes how important healthy kids are to the future of this great state!” said Steinfeld. “The leaders of this school understand the value of bringing innovative fitness ideas to their students and it’s paid off. This new fitness center will provide generations of students with the necessary tools to make physical fitness activities part their daily routine.”
“This is going to be phenomenal for our area. My students will benefit physically, emotionally, mentally and socially from this center,” said Karen Johnston, physical education teacher. “My students are already excited and asking how many days they get to use it.”
The National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils goal is to build a nation of the fittest, healthiest kids in the world. Physical activity and exercise are shown to help prevent and treat more than 40 chronic diseases, enhance individual health and quality of life and reduce health care costs. In schools, studies show that physical activity improves academic achievement, increases confidence and self-esteem, reduces discipline problems, cuts absenteeism and fosters better interpersonal relationships.
The National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils program plans to bring its challenge to all 50 states in the coming years. An attractive and unique feature of this campaign is that the Live Positively Fitness Centers are fully funded through public/private partnerships. Live Positively™ is part of Coca-Cola’s commitment to bring people together to make a positive difference, which includes supporting physical activity programs. Other companies such as Wheels Up, Anthem Blue Cross, ROLL Global LLC, New Balance, General Mills, and TuffStuff Fitness Equipment are also committed to being part of a long-term solution to helping fight the obesity epidemic.
